NOTICE

BNQ confirms that work has begun on the development of a certification program consisting of the document BNQ 3840-900 Recycled Plastic Content Products - Certification Protocol and its accompanying certification requirements based on the new CAN/BNQ standard 3840-100 - Recycled Plastic Content Products, published on August 23, 2023.

BNQ wishes to inform you that the BNQ 3840-900 certification protocol and the CAN/BNQ 3840-100 requirements document should be available for public consultation by the end of March 2024 and published during the summer of 2024.

We invite you to contact us if you have any questions on this subject.

Recycled plastic content products

Plastic resins are an integral component of modern societies. Their mechanical and chemical properties, including being lightweight and durable, make them ideally suited for a multitude of essential applications. Plastic resins have consequently come to be used as a key material in thousands of manufactured products across virtually all sectors of the economy including automotive, electronics, construction, medical, and food and beverage, among others.

As companies strive to include an increased proportion of recycled plastic content in manufactured products, and as governments consider mandating the use of recycled content in certain products, it will be crucial to have a standard method of calculating and verifying recycled content in products. A robust standard and certification protocol will ensure a level playing field for industries that adopt it and will provide consumers confidence in product claims and labelling for recycled content.

This standard for recycled plastic (recyclate) content products aims to support and encourage positive change throughout the plastic value chain, including by citizens, industry, and governments, to ensure that plastics remain in use in a circular economy, and out of the environment.

Certification Offer

Recycled plastic content products help create a sustained demand for secondary raw materials, i.e., materials derived from recycling that are used in the manufacture of new products. Recycled plastic content products thus encourage the development and maintenance of new outlets for materials otherwise destined for disposal, whether these materials come from pre-consumer or post-consumer materials. Moreover, by avoiding the use of raw materials, primary raw materials and processed raw materials, recycled plastic content products ensure better management of natural resources.

The purpose of the certification protocol will be to establish the certification requirements for verifying the conformity of recycled plastic content products with these requirements, which will relate to the quantity of recycled materials contained in a recycled plastic content product, and to the marking of this product to facilitate its identification.

Certification will be open to all manufacturers wishing to have the conformity of their products recognized, as well as to those responsible for enforcing current regulations. It will support manufacturers' recycled plastic content claims and enable regulatory authorities and consumers to better identify products made from recycled plastic.
