CanadaGAP

Food safety plays an essential role in public health. Designed in this perspective, the CanadaGAP Food Safety Program is designed for growers, packers and warehousers of fresh fruits and vegetables and greenhouse products. The CanadaGAP program is based on a rigorous analysis of the risks of chemical, physical and microbiological contamination and critical control points according to the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system. It contains safety standards grouped in two Manuals: one for field/orchard/vineyard-grown fruits and vegetables and the other for greenhouse products.

These Manuals are a solid basis for the establishment of Good Agricultural Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices, as well as the maintenance of an effective and proactive safety program. CanAgPlus, an independent Canadian non-profit organization, manages this comprehensive national food safety standard.

 

Certification Offer

The CanadaGAP certification offered by the BNQ is the best way to ensure your customers’ confidence and loyalty. It requires growers, packers and warehousers of fresh fruits and vegetables and greenhouse products to respect the requirements of the program regarding the food safety management system. They must therefore prove their compliance with the Good Agricultural Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices established by the program during audits conducted by the BNQ.

The certification requirements particularly concern the startup material, the location of the production site, water for agricultural use, conveyor and cleaning water, equipment, waste management, employee training, storage of fruits and vegetables, the traceability system and the policy for visitors. To meet the needs of businesses, certification is offered according to five options:

  • Fixed four-year audit cycle (A1 - not GFSI-recognized);
  • Variable four-year audit cycle (A2 - not GFSI-recognized);
  • Group certification with annual audit (B - GFSI-recognized);
  • Annual audit for production, packing and warehousing (C - GFSI-recognized); 
  • Annual audit for repacking and wholesaling (D - GFSI-recognized);
  • Annual audit for production, packing and warehousing (E – not GFSI-recognized);
  • Annual audit for brokerage (F – not GFSI-recognized).

In addition, you should know that options B, C and D are recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), thus giving growers, packers and warehousers privileged access to the international market.

This certification program is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
